Very few people know today that Wolves are in fact an endangered species. Mans original best friend have seen their habitat destroyed and are being pushed further and further north. However Wolves have no natural predators, all of their historic prey are plentiful and they have been on the endangered species list for over three decades. So how is it that these majesticand mystical creatures who are are so deeply embedded in legends and folklore worldwide are still endangered. Well one reason really, us. Humans have hunted wolves so meticulously over the last millenia that we have pushed them to the northernmost points of the world. The Red wolf, which is critically endangered was all but wiped from it's natural habitat.

"Red wolves actually went extinct in the wild, having once roamed all over the Eastern and Middle states of the U.S. It is only through captive breeding and re introduction efforts that any roam in their natural habitat today. Only about 50 live in the wild today. However conservationists hope to re introduce more in South Carolina and Tennessee. If not for human interference and tireless work by conservationists we would have exterminated these wolves already." (Wolfconservation.webs.com)

Wolves as previously stated have been pushed further and further north by humans, through habitat destruction, hunting and wolves reputation as cold blooded killers. In fact Wolves tend to avoid contact with humans for obvious reasons. Wolves are also seen as pests in many parts of the world due to the fact that their previous ranges have been converted into farm lands and they tend to attack farm animals if they cannot find other prey.

The above map shows the areas which wolves no longer roam and it is very obvious that these animals are being pushed further and further north away from humans.

I will get on the case and research ways or means by which humans and wolves can peacefully co-exist, hopefully one day this will be the case and we can get this truly special animal off the endangered species list.
